How To Change Your Life With Just 10 Minutes Of Meditation

For Day 2 of the free Love Yourself Challenge (join us here!), I assigned us ten minutes of meditation, because PEACE BEGINS FROM WITHIN. If you’re not peaceful inside, the world you see will be chaotic. Meditation helps you be peaceful on the inside.

It’s funny how just TEN MINUTES of meditation can be met with so much resistance. For whatever reason, in Western culture, mainstream society has embraced the fact that the body benefits from movement, but hasn’t yet embraced the fact that the mind benefits from stillness.

I get it, many of you haven’t meditated before (or have tried it before and “failed.”) And you might be thinking one of the things below:

  • “I’m terrible at meditating! I can’t get my mind to slow down.” — Yes you can. Take one conscious breath, in and out. That’s meditation. You did it. & guess what, you literally can’t fail at meditation. Some meditation sessions are more gratifying than others, but you literally can’t fail.
  • “I don’t have time to meditate!” — Oh rly? U don’t have 10min? Everyone has 10 minutes. If you have time to browse Instagram, you have ten minutes. Btw, never ONCE have I taken 10min to meditate and afterward been like “that wasn’t worth it.” It’s ALWAYS been worth it… just in case you rly are strapped for those 10min. *eyeroll*
  • “Just the thought of stopping what I’m doing for 10min of “doing nothing” gives me anxiety!” — *HOT TIP* That’s when you know you need meditation. 😉

I get it, because for YEARS, people recommended I start meditating, and those are all the thoughts (re: excuses) that would pop into my head.

I’ve always had a racing mind, but it never used to bother me that much because a-million-miles-a-minute is just kinda how I operate, ya know? But once I started Brains over Blonde, things got a lil out of hand.

As a solopreneur, everything falls on you. There are 89453 balls to keep in the air at all times. Even when you’re exhausted. Even when you’re sick. Or traveling. Or, idk, calling off your wedding, grieving, moving, & rebuilding your entire life.

Enter: meditation.

It took me being at my LOWEST LOW to finally commit to meditating every day, simply out of pure desperation. I was grasping at straws to find something – anything – that would aid in my grieving process. Like, I was one unbalanced chakra away from completely losing my shit.

I wish I hadn’t waited so long.

That’s why I’m writing this blog post – so that you can start getting the benefits of meditation NOW… before your next life crisis.

It’s hard to put into words all of the ways that meditation has improved my life because it’s so deeply personal and spiritual. But I’ll say this – I’ve never felt so connected to myself, to the universe, and the energies that connect all of us.

If that all sounds a lil too woo-woo for you, here’s a more practical explanation: If I had started meditating sooner, I honestly think I would have called off my wedding sooner (rather than spending a year torturing myself.) Meditation has helped me trust myself.

If you’re not sold yet, here are just some of the benefits of meditation:

  • reduces stress (it’s GREAT for anxiety)
  • stops racing thoughts
  • helps you relax (meditation is like Botox for your mind – it relaxes all those forehead wrinkles)
  • reduces aging
  • adds more hours to your day
  • helps you appreciate life more
  • helps you feel more connected
  • makes you & those around you happier
  • improves the functioning of your brain (which we love)
  • helps you have a good night sleep
  • improves metabolism & helps you lose weight (srsly)
  • increases immunity & helps fight diseases
  • increases your attention span
  • & like 2034923 other things, but let’s start there.

K, are you in? Start by meditating for just 10 minutes a day. Again, everyone has 10mins.

Start by meditating for just 10 minutes a day

People ask me all the time “How do you meditate?” and I always think it’s funny because… you just do it. That’s the thing. There’s no right or wrong. There’s no “trick” to it (I used to think there was a trick to it too.)

Everything you need to meditate is already within you. Basically, you just get to hang out with your soul. There’s no right or wrong here — meditation begins right where you are, right here, right now.

Getting started is easy. Sit somewhere quiet and comfortable. If you feel yourself resisting, ask yourself, what are you afraid of? This will shine a light of awareness into the darkest corners of your body and spirit. If you’re new, I recommend downloading the Headspace meditation app (I like the Australian dude; his voice is really soothing) and go through the first beginner 10min meditation to guide you through.

Tips: Don’t try to stop thought. Accept distractions. If your mind wanders, let it. Then slowly guide it back. Focus on your breath. Breathe in your intention and breathe out through the mouth everything that doesn’t serve you. Count till 5 as you inhale, 5 as you hold, 5 as you exhale. When you notice yourself thinking, DON’T JUDGE YOURSELF (the goal isn’t to control thoughts, it’s to stop letting them control you.) Just acknowledge it and come back to focusing on your breath. Count your breaths. If you forget what number you’re on, just pick up where you left off.

Btw, this book was a gift from one of my best friends from college. I highlight recommend it for anyone (especially you yogis!) who want just a quick daily meditation inspiration. It’s available in the B/B Amazon Shop! & here are the links to the other stuff pictured…

If you already have a regular meditation practice, how can you challenge yourself to take it a step further today? Ideas: meditate for longer than you ever have before, try a walking meditation (search on Spotify), or try a metta (or “loving kindness”) meditation like this one (I’m obsessed w these). There are SO MANY different kinds of meditation – so do your research (duh), try them out, and see which kinds work best for YOU.

Afterward, just notice. How do you feel now compared to ten minutes before? There’s no right or wrong here. Just notice.

Be kind to yourself. You’re not going to be an expert right away. I don’t pretend to be an expert by ANY means; I see myself as a meditator-in-progress. And just like with antidepressants, meditation isn’t going to solve all your problems. I mean… I meditate, I burn candles, I drink sole water, and I STILL eyeroll ppl into another dimension, trust me. It’s not about perfection, it’s about the journey. From sound to silence. From movement to stillness. From yourself to the universe.

When things change inside you, things change around you

Deep down, your soul always knows what to do. The challenge is to silence the mind so you can HEAR your soul. Once you can hear it, you just gotta listen. TRUST YOURSELF!

As you get more and more practiced, your mind will become a “safe place” that no one can ever take from you. I like to picture my mind as a clear blue sky and I’m floating on a cloud. Sometimes other clouds (thoughts) pop in, but I just let them float on by. Whenever I’m feeling stressed, I can dip into this place.

Through meditation, I’ve gotten comfortable hanging out with my own soul. I look forward to this sacred time where I get to access the deepest and wisest parts of myself. It’s like I’ve learned to befriend myself – more than that actually – I’ve become more and more OF myself. It’s literally changed me on the inside. And when things change inside you, things change around you.

What do I mean by things changing around you? Well, if you’re still enough, you can hear the universe. You feel its rhythm and go with its flow. Life energy is flowing through your body, like life is BREATHING you. I LOVE that I have the power to feel this energy and I’m not afraid of it.

Give it a try. I promise you’ll start to see all the unnecessary shit you’re putting yourself through on a daily basis. Trust the process and enjoy spending some quality time with yourself! Don’t forget to share your experiences & ask your questions below! Stay wild, moon child.
